Unemployment and Criminality in the Republic of Belarus: Status, Interaction and Tendencies

Abstract
The article reviews interdependencies of unemployment and crime as reflected in statistical data and a 1997 survey in Minsk. Also, conditions of labour and education in the penitentiary institutions of the Republic are evaluated. The findings relate to co-relations of the officially recorded and actual unemployment rates, trends in the crime rate growth among the unemployed people and those not attending schools, types of criminal acts committed by the unemployed, the role of the unemployed in the impact of the penitentiary system on the unemployment.
