Abstract

The processes of globalisation, liberalisation and monetary integration set the conditions for considerably improving the strength and competitiveness of the Lithuanian and European economy. Development of new technologies, introduction of Euro increases competition in the financial services sector and intensifies creation of effective single financial market. The purpose of this study is to analyse the rules of competition in banking sector in Lithuania and European Union. Intensive liberalisation processes in banking sector and remaining competition problems there are discussed in this paper. The attention is paid to the extend of applicability of general competition rules and the institutional framework for creation and implementation of those rules as well as the role of central bank in implementation of competition rules in banking sector. Effectively functioning supervision and control institution, which enforces competition law in banking sector, is a key issue in many countries. It is summarised in this paper the practise of foreign countries in this field, which let us to draw the conclusion that most of countries seek close co–operation between national competition authority and Central bank while implementing competition rules in banking sector and relinquish from the sectoral competition law supervision model and from duplication of functions of competition authority and Central bank. According to that, Lithuanian model of supervision and control of competition rules in banking sector and the possibilities of improvement of it are discussed in this paper.
