Abstract

Eight years of independence have brought radical changes into nearly all spheres of social life. The rate of repeated crimes has risen. The number of prisoners has increased. The more crowded prisons is the only “novelty” gained in the years of independence.
The article deals with the main directions of recidivism prevention in Lithuania.
The first of them is an improvement of punitive politics and punishment execution politics. This reform involves National Crime Prevention programme system. It is closely connected with recidivism prevention.
The second precondition of recidivism prevention must be the reformation of prisons according to the European standards. The Prison’s purpose is not only to control and punish for offences, but also to help convicted people in preparing to pass the other side of prison gates, that after long years in prison they could integrate into society , adapt to new changes in life.
Also the important precondition of recidivism prevention must be an ex – prisoners adaptation in society and further their crime prevention. There is not system of integrating ex – prisoners into society in Lithuania.
If these three main directions work together as a united system, recidivism prevention will be more effective.
