Abstract

By the sunset of the Republic of Rome lex maiestatis made provisions for the punishment of provoking riots, civil disobedience and finacial damage against the State. At the dawn of the Empire, the law was directed towards the Opposition of the Senate. Famous orators of the time became delatores: they would collect incriminating evidence, give Speeches of accusation and receive a part of the convict's property.
The great number and impudent behaviour of the delatores is interpreted by the historians of Rome as a result of an outdated and perverse training System of the orators.
