Drug Abuse as the Problem of the Society’s Security

Abstract
Drug use / abuse is one of the most serious problems society in Lithuania is facing today. The present article draws attention to methodological key issues involved in empirical understanding of the drug and crime connection. In this article we present general theoretical models of the drug-crime connection, including drug use caused crime, the crime caused drug use, and that the reasons of both drug use and crime are the same factors. Next, we review the empirical research that supports these explanatory models. Despite that, a single model cannot represent for the drug-crime relationship among all people. We determine drug use / abuse as the threat for the society’s security and safety.
