Abstract

In the article the opportunity of the application of fire-arms for the forced stopping of vehicles has been investigated. The research was carried out in some stages. In the first stage the probability of hitting the wheel of the car being forcedly stopped while the shot was firing from the pursued car using different fire-arms was established. In the second stage the necessity to use smoothbores loaded with shots was studied.
In order to stop a vehicle forcedly, police officers usually shoot from the chasing car. The speed difference between the chasing car and the car the driver of which disobeys the legitimate demands of the police officers to stop is from 10 km/h to 30 km/h. The distance between the shooter and the wheel of the car that is being shot at varies from 2 to 10 meters. During the experiment the shots were fired from the car that was going at a speed of 20 km/h and they were aimed at the targets which were in parallel with the direction of the car movement. The shots were fired through the open window in the front door next to the passenger’s seat.
Having performed experimental investigations, the probability of hitting the wheel of the car being forcedly stopped using different guns has been established. The dependence on the gun model and the distance until the target has also been ascertained. The research shows that the worst aiming results were achieved with the pistol “Makarov PM“. Using this pistol the average hitting the target center was 1.36 times better than using the pistol “CZ-75“ and 1.26 times better than shooting with the pistol “Winchester 1300 Defender“.
Since using fighting guns it is possible to damage the tyre and injure or kill the driver a possibility of using smoothbores for the forced stopping of the vehicles is being discussed. Investigation of using cartridges loaded with shots of different decimeter has been carried out. The probability of hitting the target has also been defined. Experimental investigations were made by which possible damage of parts of the car has been established. The research shows that using cartridges loaded with shots of 5.5 diameter the parts of the car can be damaged and using cartridges loaded with shots of 4.5 mm diameter this possibility greatly lessens, and shooting at the angle of 300 between the shooting trajectory and the car door the door is only damaged but not shot through.
