At the Beginning of Lithuanian Legal Language

Abstract
Lithuanian legal terminology and professional legal language started developing together with the re-establishment of statehood of Lithuania in 1918 meeting the requirements of a national state. In the Great Duchy of Lithuania legal relations were regulated in Slavonic office language. Later Lithuanian language was not let into the authorities by foreigners who had divided Lithuanian territory into parts. Furthermore, Lithuanian lawyers in Vilnius University were studying in Latin and Polish. After closing the University in 1832 the students were compelled to gain knowledge in foreign countries and solely in foreign languages.
The article describes the endeavour of re-established state institutions to solve this problem. It also reveals the initiative of the Ministry of Justice to prepare the dictionary of Lithuanian legal terminology which was ‘most necessary for judges, investigators and notaries’, the results of its preparation, interest and involvement of legal society. Furthermore, the article discusses the list of legal terminology approbated and published by the Terminology Commission of the Ministry of Education.
Exclusively great regard was paid to Lithuanian legal language in the State Council established in 1928. Permanent editorial commission was instituted for amending the bills drafted by the State Council and special legal terminology commission was instituted for defining and improving the new legal terms.
A significant role was played by the General tribunal which not only unified the judiciary law by settling appeals and cassation and interpreting the existent law, but also contributed to development, distribution and unification of Lithuanian legal terminology.
A fair input of particular lawyers is acknowledged. The conclusion is made that during the twentieth anniversary a solid foundation for contemporary Lithuanian legal terminology has been established.
