Abstract
Not only natural processes but human activity as well have formed the contemporary Lithuanian landscape. The population density, land use intensity and civilization anticipate the demand for land for certain activities. The most significant land use changes can be noticed in the areas of the urban influence zone. In the suburban areas of the largest Lithuanian cities the suburban landscape with no valuable properties (changing rural landscape characteristic to our country) has been forming during the past 10-20 years. With the expansion of construction the areas of fertile agricultural land (the resources of which are limited and which occur as the main means of production in agriculture) are being reduced.
The development and implementation of the clear territorial planning system should be the foundation of every modern state. It is necessary that the developed landscape should be biologically complete, aesthetic, socially acceptable, convenient and economical. Statistical and graphical data on the development of residential construction in the subdistricts of Klaipeda district were analysed in the article. The intensity of the change of the main land use and the relation between urbanized areas and solutions of the district’s territory general plan were defined. The demand for the analysis and the data collection over the land use changes is being raised. Conclusions over the influence of the urbanization process upon the use of agricultural land are being drawn. Suggestions over the amendments to the laws and the protection of agricultural lands during the process of the preparation of the territorial planning documents as well as while carrying out the more efficient state control of the land use were presented.
