Lifelong learning: aspects of creativity and happiness

Abstract
Coherence between lifelong learning, creativity and happiness in the socio-cultural context is a subject of discussions for both social scientists and politics.
The objective of the present paper is to develop and interpret the leading characteristics of the interconnection between adult education, creativity and happiness on the basis of the data of a sociological research project ‘Adult Learners in Lithuania’, which was carried out in the frame of the international project LLL2010.
The main methods applied include: document analysis, secondary statistical analysis and interpretation of data.
The results of the study allow making several main conclusions. The study revealed that learning, creativity and education are essential and intimately connected features of an individual living in the modern society. For adult learners in Lithuania, education, first of all, helps increase self-esteem, stimulates self-respect and self-reliance. Secondly, a very important factor is engagement in meaningful activity and opportunities for self-perfection. Thirdly, adult learning is also notably related to close relationship with family, friends and others who provide support. To a lesser extent, education affects one’s reflections on career opportunities and financial situation. Moreover, for more that one third of learners, learning is an enjoyable pastime.
