Abstract

Global social changes of the society have strengthened the need of improvement of children’s protection, but at the same time the development functions of family and community have weakened. Today the government can’t and even does not want to monopolize the decisions of childhood issues, that is why the issues of children’s improvement gain help from non–governmental organizations (NGO) in democratic countries. NGOs often inspire and activate voluntary help that provide community members with social services.
This article is based on the research (of the foreign countries) on the understanding of communities and the significance of voluntary help implementing programs of social improvement. Based on the interpretation of the research results, it is shown that, thanks to community’s voluntary activities, there are many opportunities to implement social improvement programs, which reflect the needs of children. The community voluntary activities cover various functions: the creation of social improvement programs and their realization, mediation between children and adults, between children and the community and between children and professionals. In addition, the research data indicates that the preparation of volunteers is necessary for the implementation of child social improvement programs as well as their on–going support and active encouragement seeking for the volunteer’s continuity in community activities.
