Abstract

The creation of a new European level social policy and globalization of common social problems determined the development of sociocultural work in Lithuania. It is a new field of study and practice in our social system, though Western societies have extensive experience in the social-cultural work. However, while creating leisure, recreation, arts, and culture management strategy it is more important not to intercept, but to adapt the content to Lithuanian social work context. While organizing the activities, events, social projects of art and culture it is necessary not only to exercise the hedonistic function but also to reduce the social exclusion of risk groups, to help them to socialize and integrate themselves into society.
The substantial changes in the society, a new attitude towards social education require the specialist is able to implement leisure, recreation or creative interests and demands to have high professional competence, to be learned and knowledgeable in all kinds of science. This requires theoretical and methodical knowledge about functions of leisure structure, ability to find out community interests and demands in different fields of cultural leisure activities, and competence to involve children, adolescents, disabled and elderly people in active cultural recreational activities.
The article review the situation of sociocultural fields, such as recreation (relaxation and leisure) and arts, as well as culture, emphasizing the role of social workers as organizers of leisure in the social system. The author analyses the research data on social workers‘attitudes towards leisure quality in social care institutions. This article also presents educational studies of leisure and recreation in Western universities and forecasts perspectives of sociocultural work in Lithuania.
