The development of renewable energy sources in the context of energy security

Abstract
The article analyses the role and importance of renewable energy sources in the context of energy security. One of the means which may improve state energy as well as national security is by increasing the use of local sources, i.e. the extension of the use of local renewable energy sources. The development of renewable energy sources at national, regional and global scale is closely linked with the sustainable development policy - one of the principles of the sustainable development indicates that non-renewable sources must be replaced by renewable ones. The article analyses the peculiarities of the EU’s and Lithuania’s growth of energy safety and the potential of Lithuania’s renewable energy, various factors (barriers) that renewable energy sources face in various stages of the development are discussed as well as possible decisions by the politics.
