Abstract

Family friendly policy is workplace policies that assist employees in combining family and work responsibilities. Significant and dominant feature of the contemporary Lithuanian labour market is women’s increasing participation while they still predominantly hold domestic role. The focus of reconciling work and family has traditionally been concentrated on women. The article deals with work-family models and a typology of workplace policies that show different approach to problems of reconciling work and family. Traditional views that family and workplace are separate spheres and family life should not intrude on the workplace are being eroded but the process is very slow. There is limited date available on the views of employers on flexible working arrangements, the benefits of such practices to employers or employees or the evaluation of existing schemes in meeting employer and employee needs.
