Abstract

Although the implementation of ISO 9001 standard seeking to create a quality management system in education sector is as much criticised as promoted, data of ISO reports show the increase in the number of ISO certified educational institutions. This article provides an analysis of experiences of higher education institutions in implementing ISO 9001 standard. Reasons for the implementation of the standard, the most common issues co-occurring during the implementation process as well as the benefits of a standardised quality management system are identified and analysed in the article. Research results show that: (1) higher education institutions often implement ISO 9001 standard in order to improve internal institutional processes and procedures and because it is conceived as a competitive tool in the market, (2) benefits of a standardised quality management system are most commonly related to changes in internal administrative processes and procedures of the institution, (3) obstacles to implementing ISO 9001 are mostly related to internal institutional issues.
