When starting implementing problembased learning, a higher educational institution faces the diversity of approaches determining the possibilities for flexible adjustment of problembased learning for the context in which it is being applied. The paper deals with the main attributes of problembased learning and their variations. It reveals the links between the features of problembased learning and competences being developed. The paper summarises theoretical insights and practical experience which serves as a starting point for a creative way of teachers and students to implement and/or improve problembased learning in their institution of higher education.
