Abstract

The objective of this article is to critically review the main theoretical references in the area of domestic violence, especially violence against women and violence in intimacy. We seek to analyze how the concepts of this type of violence are portrayed and used in the gender studies of the last decades. It is also intended to raise awareness of the realities of domestic violence in Brazil and Portugal. Based on the statistical analysis of the two countries, it can be seen that domestic violence in Portugal is broader, not only for women. It is also interesting to mention that, if after the edition of the Maria da Penha Law, great emphasis was placed on the creation and implementation of Specialized Police Stations for women victims of domestic violence, the same attention was not given to the Military Police, which is the victim's first contact with the system
