The attitude of Lithuanian residents and police officers towards juvenile delinquents

Abstract
This article presents a comparative analysis of the attitude of Lithuanian residents and police officers towards juvenile delinquents by using the results of surveys carried out by the author. In 2006-2008 upon the request of the Ministry of Interior, a study was carried out on the attitude of Lithuanian residents and experts of criminal justice (police officers) towards juvenile delinquents’ problems, their prevention and control. The research and conclusions set out in this article are relevant for criminal justice institutions, non-government organizations and other institutions dealing with delinquents. The research data showed different opinions of both surveyed groups regarding juvenile delinquency and its prevention and control. In comparison with police officers, residents have a less categorical attitude towards stricter punishment, the effectiveness of punishment institutions and the possibility of delinquents return to conventional behaviour.
