Functional Local Community as Foundation of Public Society

Abstract
The article defines and discusses the concepts of public society, community, highlights the definition of local community and its correlation with public society. The author concludes that existance of functional local communities is an essential condition of existance of mature public society. The overview of communitarian theories of such authors as Ch. Taylor, A. Etzioni, M. Walzer, D. Bellas, R. Nisbet, A. Lingis, B. Anderson, A. Poviliûnas, K. Masiulis and the findings of a survey carried out in five municipalities in 2005 and its conclusions are presented in the article.
